TUSCAN HILLS’ ITINERARIES : CASCIANA TERME, CHIANNI, TERRICCIOLA

Are you looking for something special to see in the Pisan surroundings? There’s a wonderful itinerary in Valdera: Pontedera, Casciana Terme, Chianni, Terricciola.
The Pisan Hills will inebriate you with their aromas of wine and olive oil, enchant you with colors of groves and flowery meadows and enrich your mind with its cultural legacy of great artistic value – precious heritage, hidden between the dunes of these harmonious plains at the foot of the mountains, where fascinating villages and towns of this fabulous itinerary stick out between Casciana Terme, Chianni and Terricciola.
Starting from Pontedera that borders on the Pisan Hills, logistically you’ll find yourself in a perfect location that allows you to reach easily all the most fascinating towns and villages of the area. Visiting Pontedera, which name takes its origin from a bridge built across the Era by the Uppezzini (an ancient Pisan family), you’ll immediately realize that in this place the old and the new harmoniously coexist.
On one side, a neoclassical Cathedral, the Church of Santa Lucia with the eponymous chapel of the tenth century, on the other – the most recent project of the “stone seats”, in which 17 important international contemporary artists called upon to create uniquely designed benches take part.
Finally, the Piaggio Museum, opened in 2000, that occupies 3000 square meters of a former tool shop, a striking example of the industrial area recovery; projected by Giovanni Agnelli and designed by Andrea Bruno. All this – aimed to preserve the historical memory of the most important engineering company in the Central Italy.
In Pontedera you’ll also have an opportunity to stay at the most comfortable hotel of the area – the PisaValdera Hotel, a multifaceted four-star structure that combines a great variety of qualities, maintaining high standards of excellence and hospitality.
From the PisaValdera Hotel you’ll quite easily get to the first point of the itinerary: Casciana Terme. This ancient center was quite famous for its thermal waters already in 1800s. The historical vicissitudes of the town, that in the course of the time grew around its thermal baths that give birth to volcanic waters, are quite omnigenious.
The thermal baths of Casciana owe their fame to the legend of a blackbird that got cured thanks to these waters, and they are considered the most salutiferous in Italy. Studied by medical specialists and chemists for their exceptional qualities, these waters gush out of the ground at the temperature of 36 degrees, clear and odorless. You should absolutely visit this spa village that rounds the eighteenth-century Villa Borri.
From Casciana Terme, crossing Rivalto, between pine forests and chestnut groves, at the distance of about 10 kilometers there’s Chianni. From this fascinating and armored town on the top of the hill you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Tuscany. The landscape is really fascinating, the nature is awash of animals, such as roe deer and wild boar, and you can’t exclude the probability of meeting them here. Actually, every year, on the second and the third weekend of November, a famous wild boar festival (“la sagra del cinghiale”) takes place.
The area is also rich in mushrooms and truffles, and for the lovers of these delicacies there are a lot of themed walks in the woods to take part in.
In the ancient village there’s also a Parish Church, the Church of San Giovanni that should be absolutely visited, and the Sanctuary of Madonna del Carmine.
The road that connects Ponsacco and Casciana Terme leads to an intersection with a signpost “Terricciola”. Turning left and then, hundred meters ahead, turning right, along the road that leads to Chianni, there’s Terricciola, a town of wine. This town of Etruscan origins, with its defensive towers, nowadays is a center of continuous production, sales and tasting of wine along with themed walks among numerous wineries. It’s a continuous clanging of glasses during the festival of the White Night in July, the “glasses of stars” in August and – the cherry on top – the festival of grapes and wine at the end of September.
