HOTEL TOWER INN PISA VALDERA TO THE NEARBY WONDERS CHERRIES AND CASTELS

FROM THE FANTASTIC HOTEL TOWER INN PISA VALDERA TO THE NEARBY WONDERS OF LARI. BETWEEN CHERRIES AND CASTELS.
Just 15 kilometers away from our four-star hotel Tower Inn PisaValdera of Pontedera, amongst the Pisan Hills you can find Lari, a typical local town scattered with exuberant villas and farmhouses steeped in history. This small medieval town among the Hills, between the Pisan Valley and the Hill that hosted the Fortress of Montanino, was awarded by the Touring club in recognition of tourist and environmental value of this place.
You have to climb up 92 stairs to reach the walkway, the path that rounds the fortress, vast vineyards and olive groves – all this is Lari. You can’t but visit this ancient Medici jewel with its lanes, squares and courts bordered by beautiful medieval baroque buildings, from Porta Fiorentina (a large gate in the old town walls) that bears a Medici blazon, as well as above the arch – a blazon of the Salviati, and one of the Lari – on each side.
A rural atmosphere and numerous villages here and there, surrounded by the hills, preserve the ancient atmosphere and antique architectural conformation of the town, setting it off like a precious frame.
Lari is also famous for its cherries and for its Martelli spaghettis, but you can’t leave this place without having enjoyed the panoramic view available from Castello dei Vicari that inspired Leonardo the Gran Duke of Tuscany to such an extent, that he wrote: “I came to Lari and from the Fortress I could see the most beautiful part of Tuscany”. Castello dei Vicari, built in the XI century (1067) still conserves its typical medieval double walls with two entry gates, and it can be reached covering the above mentioned distance of 92 stair steps. In the square there are 92 blazons of different podestas of Lari, embellishing the facades of the Vicars’ Palace, Cancillieri Palace and the prison. Inside the Castle there are: a Courtroom of the 700s, a torture room with a lot of torture instruments, and basements with XVI century jails. The ancient rooms still contain a lot of masterpieces of Della Robbia and vestiges of wall-paintings of the XIV-XV centuries. In the middle of the court there’s an ancient cistern of the castle, and by its side – a Chapel of the Spousals of the Virgin, with 10 typical cells, from which the prisoners could follow religious services. This fortress often hosts art exhibitions, theater and poetic performances.
Another wonder of Lari are, as we already mentioned above, cherries from the local hills. This town was famous for its cherries already in the 1600s, and in its market, the vastest and the most famous in the province, cherry has always been the queen of all the fruits produced on these hills. There are 19 officially recognized traditional varieties: Crignolo, Cuore, di Giardino, Morella, Papalina, la Precoce, and so on. About 150 hundredweight of cherry are sold annually in the local markets and to the rest of Tuscany. Since 1957, from the last Sunday of May and till the beginning of June, local producers of cherry set up market stalls in the town and organize a festival (“sagra”) that through the years becomes more and more famous. The town turns into a great fair, where cherry is tasted and sold, the best producer receives “the golden cherry” – so, it’s a real competition, where not only the best cherry composition wins, but also the best producer of each typical variety is awarded. Some varieties are a real rarity, preserved thanks to a wise work of farmers, willing to save it from extinction. Summing up, this delicacy with thousands of purifying properties and so many benefits for health, can’t but be tasted in its 19 varieties, at list once in your life!
