FROM THE TOWER INN TO THE ISLAND OF GIGLIO AND GIANNUTRI

Your journey to the islands of the archipelago will not be complete unless you give honor to the Island of Giglio, so multifaceted and admirable from all points of view – it’s maritime and agricultural, rich in history and traditions, savage and Mediterranean. The tour will start at the port of Giglio, where the ferries dock (just like the Etruscans did 1200 years before Christ, and after them – the Romans). This wonderful place looks like a beautiful painting, with its boats, Saracen Tower, palm trees, pastel-colored houses, restaurants and taverns on stilts, bars and small shops full of souvenirs. After having admired such a splendid view you may visit the medieval village of the Giglio castle – a plenty of houses made of stone, with lots of stairs, giving this place an aspect of a Christmas crèche. Then you may go to the district Rocca and visit the Square of the 18th of November – such a fantastic place! In the town you can also find the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle, after that – a walk along fascinating paved streets, lanes, back alleys, stairs of all kinds, intertwined like in a maze where you can relax and have a rest, is just what you need! It’s quite curious to know that there’s also an underwater Christmas crèche and at Christmas there are guided tours you can participate in, at night or during the day – it’s your opportunity to see the Crèche, set up in the depth of the bay of Campese.
There are three beaches on the Island that can be reached following asphalted roads. The first one is Campese – a sandy beach between the sea stack of the island and the Tower. On the other side of the island you can find Cala dell’Arenella, wonderful, pink and sandy, protected by the Castle, miracle of miracles. From here you can go directly to a little inlet – fantastic Caletta with its rosy rocks going into a crystal-clear sea. To the south of the port you’ll find Cala delle Cannelle with its white sand – a beautiful, but almost always crowded place. To be able to reach other beaches you’ll need to take a boat or go on foot, following the roads marked in red.
Giannutri is the most meridional island of the archipelago. Small and rocky, a Mediterranean piece of land covered by forests, with rugged reefs and sea caves, it’s a unique place, tough and deserted, not a typical touristic place of public amusement, but it’s really spectacular for those who are looking forward to get away from it all and immerse themselves into a special atmosphere. Actually, since ancient times this place doesn’t attest any human presence, except for that of the pirates. However, you’ll be able to cross the island only if you have a license from the Park authority, but this problem can be solved, contacting a tour guide or a touristic agency, if for no other reason, than because it’s not so easy to travel through the island, since the roads are more adapted to sportsmen. There are just two beaches: Cala Spalmatoio and Cala Maestra – two small harbors. Also there are no hotels, but we highly recommend you to visit this hostile and savage land, second to none in Italy.
